Having the rehearsal dinner at your house is a great idea...I say that cause 1) it's cost effective 2) less stressful and 3) That's what we're doing 
For us, having a bbq in our backyard is actually a good showing of our personalities. We're not traditional by any means and are just laid back people. If MN weather wasn't so unpredictable, that may be what we would have tried to do for the actual wedding!
