Default Is a Guest book necessary?

Here's my question-we're having a small, intimate wedding. 25-35 people, all immediate family members. We're not doing the traditional reception-it's going to be a formal, sit-down dinner at a resort, where we're having the ceremony. Do I have to have a guest book? It just doesn't seem necessary to me, but I want to have a valid argument because I know my mother isn't going to agree (she doesn't agree with anything I have done for the wedding so far!)

Please!!!! Any advice would be appreciated!
