A guest book is definitely not necessary. But there are different versions of it that may appease you and your mother. Like I've seen the photo one, where you have a photo of you and FH with a thick picture matte around it that the guests sign, then you'll have a reminder of your day and guests that you'll actually look at again!
We're doing a sort of yearbook approach. I had a book made up by Snapfish with a bunch of pics of my fiance' and I throughout our relationship that people can look through and sign.
As with everything, it is your wedding and ultimately your decision
