Different Traditions...
In many cultures and religions around the world, the wedding ring serves as a symbol of commitment for newly married. We share here some of the more interesting customs, all of which show how the concepts of faith, love and commitment transcend all of mankind.
• In many Western countries, the wedding ring is worn on the 4th finger of the left hand. However, in other countries – including India, Spain, Germany, Greece and Russia, the ring is worn on the right hand.
• In a Jewish wedding ceremony, the ring is placed on the forefinger of the right hand.
• In Eastern Orthodox and Eastern Catholic ceremonies, the rings are blessed with holy water in the betrothal celebration, and are not technically a part of the actual marriage ceremony.
• "With this ring I thee wed, with my body I thee worship, and with all my worldly goods I thee endow.” These words are from the Church of England Book of Common Prayer.
• Roman Catholic ceremonies typically include the vow: "Take this ring as a sign of my love and fidelity. “
• "With this ring, you are consecrated to me according to the law of Moses and Israel" is the call of Jewish grooms. In Reform ceremonies, brides will also repeat the vow to the groom.
• Greek Orthodox priests make the sign of the cross with the rings over the bridegroom’s head during the ceremony.
