Exclamation Engagement Party

We're pretty sure, at this point, that we're going to have an engagement party. Well, I should say, some sort of pre-wedding party lol. Our wedding is set for 10/2010 and we'd like this party to be 09/2009. Is a year before the wedding too soon for it to be called a shower? I'm not, by any means, trying to be greedy here, but we really are hoping to make a few bucks before the wedding. We're on such a tight budget, that every little bit is going to help us fund our big day. So what would be a polite way of saying that we would really appreciate gifts of money? My friend suggested putting something like this on the invites:
"Because we are not having a wedding shower, we invite you to come and join us for our engagement party."
She said most people give gifts for a shower, so they'd most likely get the hint. What does everyone think?
