Default Taking part of husband's name

Hi all,
I'm engaged to be married within the next 12 months (no date yet). My fiance is Mexican and so has a double barrel name. I want to take his name but only the first part. Does anyone have experience with this? Can I do it legally? Without having to legally change my name I mean? I'm in Illinois.

Try this website to check the info but I believe that you can take whatever name you want. http://www.bridelaw.com/index.asp
Also in Mexican tradition doesn’t one of his last names come from his mom and one from his dad?

You're right about the tradition. His dad's name is first, followed by his mom's. We gave our kids his dad's last name, and if I was Mexican I would have his dad's followed by my dad's (my) last name. Since the males' name is the one that carries down and across, it's the part I intend to use. Thanks for the link. I'm looking into it now.
