Hi all,
I'm engaged to be married within the next 12 months (no date yet). My fiance is Mexican and so has a double barrel name. I want to take his name but only the first part. Does anyone have experience with this? Can I do it legally? Without having to legally change my name I mean? I'm in Illinois. |

Try this website to check the info but I believe that you can take whatever name you want. http://www.bridelaw.com/index.asp
Also in Mexican tradition doesn’t one of his last names come from his mom and one from his dad? |

You're right about the tradition. His dad's name is first, followed by his mom's. We gave our kids his dad's last name, and if I was Mexican I would have his dad's followed by my dad's (my) last name. Since the males' name is the one that carries down and across, it's the part I intend to use. Thanks for the link. I'm looking into it now.
