Let me start by saying, I love my mother-in-law-to-be. She's a great woman, but she has some issues with her appearance. She wears extremely revealing and inappropriate clothing. She's got a great body, but I feel that she lacks an understanding of when showing it off is appropriate. We're set to go shopping for dresses, but it sounds to me like she's planning on buying the dress from the internet. We are having an evening wedding. I just don't want her showing up with copious amounts of cleavage and short skirt. She's really beautiful and more conservative clothing would only enhance that. When she wears her normal "dress up" clothing, she just looks cheap
![]() How do I bring this up with her? I don't want to hurt her feelings, but I also don't want her to be meeting my family for the first time looking... cheap. |

Hi!
I certainly understand your concern. But why not try to see if you can feel her out by asking her to show you some of the dresses she's been looking at. Or you can thumb through some bridal magazines and point out some of the photos of MOG or even appropriate attendant dresses that you think would be flattering and reasonably sexy on her without trying to cover her up completely. If you can give her some input on some age-appropriate but non-MOG-looking gowns, she might be more apt to get the idea. But if you go too far and show her very conservative dresses, chances are she's going to really balk and complain that's she's a young woman and still hot and she doesn't want to look like an old lady. So think along the lines of Raquel Welch who, even though in her 70s, is STUNNING, sexy and yet never cheap looking. Or how about Sigourney Weaver? She's always sexy and classy. Or Michelle Pfieffer? Wow! I wish I looked like that at my age! LOL In fact, you might start with next week's issue of PEOPLE or any other entertainment mag that's likely to have Oscar gown photos in it. You might even point out a photo of Michelle Pfieffer or another age-appropriate actress and say, "Wow! Look at how hot she looks in that. And you'd never believe she's X old. I just love that dress. She's elegant and sexy at the same time. I bet you'd look even better than she does in something like that." I'm not sure how old your MOG is but assuming she's under 50/60, any of these women can show her that she can still be sexy without going too over the top (or more to the point) that her top doesn't pop! Hope this helps. Let us know how things are going and her reaction. Jana Johnson Associate Bridal Bags | Bridal Gifts | Monogrammed Bags Bizz Bag, Inc. |
