It is perfectly acceptable for the father of the bride and groom to wear a nice suit. However with that said, having the fathers wear tuxe's sets them apart from other guest and highlights their special connection in the wedding. It's really a personal preference.

Only the guys in the wedding party are wearing tuxes at ours. Of course it is a second marriage for both of us so we're not doing everything as formal as the first ones we had.
It's your (and/or their) personal preference, but as far as etiquette, I'd say not necessary.

Thanks ladies.
I know both of our fathers have nice black suits already, so if they don't wanna go all out and rent a tux then that's fine with me. I'll probably just buy them both the same ties that our wedding party will be wearing, that way they will stand out somewhat.

It's your wedding day & you really can do anything you want. If that's what you want the dad's to wear, then it will be perfectly fine. You need to be happy with the choices & make it your day.

Both my father and his father are wearing "penguin suits" (his father's words) but they are both bringing a a change of clothes for the reception!
And I don't mind that just as long as it is after the dances!
