How to convert AVI to MP4 with high quality?

I have a bunch of large AVI files from my Canon IS 850 camera. To save disc space, I would like to convert these AVI files to a format that will let me keep the same quality. In certain forum, I found several recommendations of software but are really old and hard to operate.
