Question non-mushy music ideas

based on another post i was just reading, i'm not the only person struggling with this problem:

when picking out songs to dance to at your reception, you try to pick songs that suit you and your relationship with the dance partner in question (usually spouse or father), but for some of us, sappy songs just don't work. maybe you never were really close to your father, and a mushy, sappy, nostalgic song would seem out of place. or maybe you and your fiance are...well, offbeat, let's say. i mean, nerds, goths, class clowns, hippies...they all fall in love and get married too. for some folks, their relationship with their significant other isn't the romanticized mushy gushy type of relationship that goes with your typical first dance song.

so...what are the non-mushy among us supposed to dance to? OK, there's no law saying that any of your dances (first dance, father/daughter) have to be a stereotypical slow dance. if you know other dance styles, you could take things in a completely different direction. but for those among us who are barely coordinated enough to slowdance (and there's nothing wrong with being spastic ), finding slow songs that aren't sickeningly sweet is no cakewalk. anybody got any ideas?

I had to laugh reading this lol. You have a fun and corky way of putting things ~ I love it. But anyways, I know what you mean. I'm not against slow songs, but I'm dead set on picking songs that not many people pick. I like to be different. As I mentioned in other posts, for our father/daughter dance I'm picking John Mayer's - daughters. I don't know if you know the song good, but the lyrics kinda fit in if your relationship hasn't been all that great with your dad. Which is exactly why I'm picking it. My father and I have only recently been kind to eachother. As a child, he was very tough on me (which is pretty much the typical Portuguese household) and we never had that special father/daughter bond. If you don't know the lyrics to that song, look it up, you'll see how fitting it is. As far as other songs in my wedding, well, I'm not 100% sure on alot lol. I think we're gonna have, Come on feel the noise by Twisted Sister, for the bridal party entrance. My 15 year old brother says that's by Quiet Riot, but I'll look into that later. And I'm really liking that song Adam Sandler sings at the end of 'the wedding singer' for our first dance. It's slow and sweet but yet it's dorky lol ~ which is totally me. Really, just pick songs you like. It's not your aunts wedding or your mother- in - law's or your cousin's....it's your wedding. Pick songs that remind you and your fiance' about your life together thus far.

Hi there, new to the site today and need some advice! My wedding isnt until September but I want to know what our "first dance" song will be ahead of time... my fiance and i both love this song but its a little more upbeat and completely not your typically wedding song... Is it ok to use? We are going to practice dancing to it to see if it is even doable! Mt fiance is a HUGE music junky and refuses to use songs that everyone uses which Mandy mentioned as well. Its nice to have songs that not everyone knows... we also plan on giving out a CD as one of our favors so that of course would be on there

purevolume™ | Between The Trees
The song is White Lines and Red Lights

You have to really listent to the words, its such a sweet song

Thanks for your help!

Mandy, yes, it is "Cum on feel the noise" and it is by Quiet Riot

As for the music selection, I could not agree more! We are also trying to find songs that are meaningful to us, but not so disgustingly over used.
We have looked at a couple of songs by Lenny Kravitz! My fiance is also a huge music junky, and has some really obscure songs for me to listen to... Not so sure about some of these tunes!!
